I would post a web site that is not a sales site for you folks. It does, however, contain most of a useful document I wrote some 10 or 15 years back that will illuminate a number of questions about how motors work. It does lack the ending portion because it is posted on a commercial site. I wanted to avoid any feedback to the business.

When you reach the page, scroll down about a quarter of the way to "Home Shop Electrics". That is the piece you want to look at. It is 50 pages in it's cut down form, in PDF format. It doesn't answer all the many questions about electricity, but will give you enough knowledge to ask them intelligently. Sea Stories is also there but contains no electrical tall tales.

The question of single phase versus three phase motors will become fairly clear; why they are two different animals. The question of how to make a "converter" has been deleted but the whys and wherefores are there. Hope just one person will find it useful. There is no serious math involved.

Thanks! Downloaded the PDF. Gonna take some time tomorrow to digest it.
