As some of you know I am looking for a 13X40 or so lathe to take the place of my antique 1923 13 inch southbend and my 10 inch Craftsman Commercial lathes to come into this century of lathe technology and get away from sub 1 inch spindle bores.
So I spoke to a guy Yesterday that is Selling a Hardinge and a Feeler second operation lathe. Saw the machines today... $600 for both is a smoking deal. He frankly needs space. I have no need of a second op lathe but mentioned needing A dividing head. I came home with 3. Two Cincinnati 8 inch body dividing heads and a square body with a 10 inch chuck on it. These things are MASSIVE. Purely engine hoist material. I can't bring them from the ground which means they are 250 plus lb heavy. WITHOUT chucks. The plates for the one are at least 8 inch and most likely 10. also got a tail stock for one of them. Gonna sell a couple of them as having 3 is silly. Short of that, might find someone that needs them and has a lathe that fits my needs and do some trading. Oh, the good part. I walked out of there with 3 huge dividing heads for 250 bucks.
 
I think we are all compulsive liars when it comes to tools and machinery.....:beer:
 
Haven't had time to take pics yet.... they are coming. I was hoping to get them cleaned up first. but i may not
 
Keith, I hope those weren't in Licking County!
 
Supposed to take pic of the condition you got them, Then of what they cleaned up to be. They way some things look to start with may give an indication of things.
 
Well we spoke of pictures,,,, so I took some as I began the repairs.


Pictures are of the brazing procedure repairing the broken casting. Parts were aligned and "tacked" with braze before pulling the part off and using a die grinder and a ball carbide cutter to groove the crack out and fully braze it inside and out. After brazing, the high parts were taken down then smoothed with cartridge rolls and painted black. May get some gray paint as that was proper for Cincinnati hardware.

Well it's back together. Couple pics. Ended up black as I had it and blue... no gray.
turned out ok. Need to make a new nut for the counter shaft though. Not a huge deal but something that will need done to complete it.

You can make some pretty amazing repairs by brazing. I've made a few myself, but knew a guy who owned a radiator repair/welding shop when I was much younger, and he was just amazing to watch. Everything from the thinnest brass radiators, to large castings, and made it look so easy. Glad to see you have that bad boy back in service. Mike
