Anyone here adapted their shop press for metal shearing? I just picked up a HF 20-ton shop press and now I think, "what the heck did I wait so long to get one of these!?" :) So instead of using electric shears or metal cutting blade on circular saw I was thinking of some way to build a shear for the press. Thanks.

Oooh, I have a set of 16" chipper blades, the ones you see chopping tree limbs into chips, powered by an automotive V8 engine. The ones I have were throwaways because they have been sharpened too many times, but they are still about 16 x 2 x 5/16" and are made from hardened A-2 steel. They are also very sharp. I'll bet they would make a good shear blade, mounted at an angle to the work to make a slicing cut...

Old thread but I just read it so it's new to me :).
I bet it can be done---some creative individual out there....
Bob,, I made a shear out of 2 HSS blanks my shop teacher rounded up for me. I used a 1/4 flywheel with the ring gear welded to it. The starter/bendix gear was the drive gear. I used 1/2 " plate for the frame and scissor action mechanism.
I wonder what I did with that thing?
It worked very well.
Did you ever do anything with those chipper blades?

I hope that when you locate it and dig it out that you give us a few pictures.
