I just installed the backlash upgrade, P/N 5011U, to my older 5400 mill and I'd just like to say if you are using a similar machine without this upgrade you should install it. It's like having a new machine. It reduced the X and Y backlash on my mill to near zero with no binding. Sherline made this production change in 2004. If you don't already have the new style and you have the old style shown below the upgrade is $10 well spent! I also replaced the captive nuts inside the saddle due the age of the machine. That was entertaining.
One thing I was surprized by when I took the table apart is how much debris gets collected in the lead screw bores and on the bottom of the saddle. Big mess. I think I'm going to start washing it down with some kind of spray solvent when I clean it. That and find a better way to cover the Y axis screw and ways.
