Hi,

I have been told that a silicon carbide (Green) wheel is required to dress up the cheap HF bits that I own. They are readily available on line , however I don't know the proper Grit to use . The choices I found were 60 80 and 100 Grit.

Tnx richman

It's like sandpaper. The higher the number, the smoother the finish. I would go with the 100 grit if all you have to do is touch up an existing profile.

I am a real fan of the cheap HF lathe bits. (key word here is cheap) Many times I touch mine up on my normal bench grinder, with about a 100 grit silicon oxide wheel on it. If I need to, I will finish it on the carbide grinder that has 100 grit green wheels on it. For major reshaping, I use the standard bench grinder, because in addition to just grinding the carbide, I am grinding a lot of the underlying steel also and I don't like to tear up my green wheels.

I have a bunch of US braised carbide tooling for sale cheap. Much nicer than HF grades C2, C5 and C7. PM me if you are interested.

John
