Set Screw & Three Jaw Chuck

I took my check apart to clean it up and was wondering if anyone knows what these small set screws are used for. The three screws in the center hold the cover on the scroll but there are three small ones on the perimeter. You can see the one in the pic. I'm just curious.thumbnail_IMG_20161030_183611006[1].jpg
 
Like Ken said, they hold the pinions in place. Specifically, they are a long post that extends well into the chuck body, but only threaded at the top. The unthreaded portion sits in a groove in the pinion so that it doesn't fall out.

Probably would've figured that out if I had actually taken it apart. I just took the cover off and did a visual inspection.:guilty:
