I saw some interesting work done with a round shaped carbide tip. I have wanted to get one of those for my mini-lathe.

I did a quick search on Amazon, and found this:
https://www.amazon.ca/Milling-Machi...1500239232&sr=8-4&keywords=round+carbide+tool

Now I am curious as to why this is only for milling machine, and no lathe is listed? And on second thought, I am wondering why it is so damn cheap. LOL.

I do not quite have any way to hold these tips (yet)... but if someone knows where to get them for a mini-lathe thanks in advance.

Still looking into this stuff.

The are milling machine inserts, that are held in a shell mill type holder, design to give a concaved profile. They are used standing on edge, with a screw through the center hole. I suppose you could make a holder, to hold it flat , for lathe use, with probably poor results. HSS can be ground and bonded carbide bought to do the same profile, for a lot less money and offering better results

To add to what Bufflo20 said, It's more or less a profiling cutting insert for a face mill. Mainly for profiling a surface where you are taking large steps removing material and leaving a fairly decent surface that may get left that way or finishing operation comes in and makes it smoother. Mainly used on CNC mills.

I have some 5/8 dia ones. Made a holder for the zero clearance ones to profile a groove on a tubing bender I made. Worked great.

Had some with relief and made a handle for them to use on the wood lathe. They work well too.

That is what I did, made it for my wood lathe for doing pen Barrels. I think made a cut out with a ball mill, worked great

For lathe use, such a large diameter invites chatter, especially on small lathes and any significant depth of cut. I'd steer clear of them. I have used small diameter ones on the lathe for profiling of radius bending dies, using the hydraulic tracer, and of course they could be used for N.C profiling as well; the one that I used was about 1/4" diameter, and the radius to be machined was roughed out with other tools first, as the radius tool is fairly small and delicate

Ok, I will simply experiment by grinding HSS blanks into something similar and see how it goes...
