Question about project materials?

I have a new shop project in the planning (thinking about) stages. Not exactly a metal working project but it is a wooden case for measuring tools used on metal projects.

Yesterday I went to the Woodcraft store and a big box lumber company to look at available woods and small hardware. The real nice looking woods are out of site as far as cost goes for small clear pieces. The red oak looked nice and is priced more reasonably but I remember from younger years that oak turns steel black when I left dad’s axe in an oak log. No real harm to the axe. However dad was not happy that I was playing with his axe and had left it out. I also read on one of the forums that real wool felt should not be used in contact with stored tools.

The question is what other materials I should not use for a measuring tool case project like this?
