Thanks for that. When I tried searching the internet for possibilities, the only references that came up for non-magnetic seemed to be 304 and 316. I'll tag it 303 when I store the stub away.

Metal Supermarkets will be opening here on March 27. I should stock up on some good SST and some 7075.

Ya the only way I tell the flavors of 300 apart other than how it cuts or welds is color code on end of bars. At work our CNC lathe dept has scrap barrels of 3-4" long pcs of various materials - essentially drops from the last unusable bit the bar feeders cant push. They have separate barrels for brass, crs, ss etc but not sorted by grade. Ie most ss is 303, but theres 304,316, even some 321 mixed in. Once in awhile if I have a small project and need a pc I grab one. Made a pressure tester for my boat outdrive from one last week.

I think maybe color codes are supplier specific? (ie no set standards) i know all our CRS has green ends. Found another red pc marked aisi 303
I believe the 304 is pink.

I have half a dozen pieces with that same kind of red that are A2. Absolutely no standard to the colors from one organization to another.

Yup -- I'm at work and have a piece of red ended stainless on my desk with AISI 316L on it.
