Seeing as I have the box right now, I can tell you that when the lid gets put back on there won't be room for anything else to fit.

Ken, since you have things you'd like to donate, perhaps you post pictures of the items and interested members put their name in a hat for a random drawing. I have done this on another forum. I was satisfied that my excess stuff was going to someone that could use it and in the process some guys got items that they needed for the cost of shipping. That's just a suggestion.

We have a "Christmas Gifting" thread that should be kicking off in the next couple of weeks. I have been looking around the shop for the extras and duplicates to be ready when the time comes.

Do you need my home address or would it be preferable to receive it at work where we have an actual loading dock and forklift? ;)

After giving this some thought over the last few days, we do have some history of Autonoz starting the boxes and more or less seeing to their contents when they get started and once per year after that. Maybe Ken (4gsr) could send his donations to Autonoz so that he can figure out what should be added to the pass around box. The box will be going to him coming up in late December so that Pass Around 2016 can end, and Pass Around 2017 can begin. That would be a good time to add some fresh items.

The other option, as already mentioned, is that Christmas is approaching quickly, and Ken could gift those items to some lucky fellow through a gifting thread.

rmack898, have you received an address from Fitter Bill yet? We should probably concentrate on getting the box moving again.

Perhaps it would make sense to submit our contact information to be added to the form, on an opt-in basis? I have no problem giving my personal email address (same thing @ gmail), phone number, and mailing address. That way there won't be even a 2 hour delay in getting the information to the person who needs it. Obviously anyone who isn't interested in that can continue to do it as we have been doing (or even preemptively contacting the person on the list after them even before receiving the box).

I hope this doesn't come across as overly anxious on my part. My specialty is operational efficiency. I can't turn it off. At least once per week I make a change to how I work, and sometimes to the way others work, to shave minutes or sometimes even just seconds off of processes. (In one recent example two people in another department were assigned an extra 5-15 seconds of work per vehicle which will take from 1 to 10 minutes per vehicle off further down the process of getting the vehicles on the front line, ready for sale.) With that context in mind you can probably imagine how I itch watching this process of contacting people sometimes only after the box is ready to send out again. :)

I realize this pass-around isn't a business, and doesn't have to be done in an efficient manner. But it is clearly a good thing and that good thing could be enjoyed by at least a few more people each year if it moves just a little faster. :-D

Sorry for the delay guys, the box left for Fitter Bill this morning.
I lost my domestic water well for the house and getting it fixed has kept me busy for the last week.
I'll get a pic of what I took from the box posted up here shortly.

    Jon,
Did you follow (read all of) last years Pass Around thread? Have you read all of this thread?
If so, you're a true optimist trying to influence the flow. Better chance trying to push a rope.
Since being involved in Pass Around I've a new understanding of how difficult (improbable?) it is to 'pass around' in a timely manor.
Efficiency . . . ROTFLMAO. Good luck with that.:grin::grin:

I can't tell if you're familiar with "pushing rope" as a euphemism for erectile dysfunction...

Yes, I've seen how it goes. And I've seen and helped improve businesses that were as casual with their production processes. Optimism is definitively the key. It's an incurable condition.

Terry is working on creating a contact log for the future. While there have been a couple of hiccups this year, for the most part, the box has changed hands in a timely matter. Would we all like to see it move faster? Of course.

Let's face it. Lifes little setbacks can crop up at any time. A family or business matter can come anytime at any minute. Health problems also can pop up in a minute. All these can happen at an instant at any inopportune time. The administrators do a good job on trying to keep things going and sometimes there may not be a way to get it going in a timely manner due to the nature of the problem. All we can do is sit and wait sometimes. I know it can be hard because I was once one of those sitting and waiting. But we must do what we have to. Maybe a phone list that only the administrators and moderators can access would help. It may not speed things up but may help letting folks know why something is sitting.

Of course they can. Did someone suggest otherwise?? That's exactly the point here. The goal is to minimize the effects of those events by communicating addresses ahead of time.
That is only true if you haven't done anything more proactively beforehand.

Just because someone sends their address ahead does mean the person with the box doesn't end up in the hospital or real busy all of a sudden and can not send the box on right away. Sure they have the address but maybe not the time to do anything. And as far as only being able to wait for the box, what else can someone do?

I didn't say that it would eliminate every possible delay. The point is to minimize the ones we can, such as not getting a shipping address because someone hasn't been online for a bit. That is an entirely different scenario than you had with Bernie. Honestly, why the resistance??

A couple hours of waiting to get a response at that point can mean an entire additional day before it arrives at the home of the next recipient. And the ones I've heard about so far have been more than a couple hours. It's one thing to have to wait for the box to arrive when there is a delay in shipping it. But to have a delay because we didn't do what we could to plan ahead and communicate shipping addresses before it's time to actually ship? That's just silly.

    Jon,
you were responding to my post which was about the delay after someone received the box but did not pass it along timely. That has happened a few times on here. You did not say it was about a different type of delay. I sent my address to bernie even before he got the box. SO there will always be unexpected delays even when things are done properly. So let's just drop it and do the best we can.

Here's a pic of what I took from the box. These were 5/8" or 3/4" shank tools and will be a welcome addition for my Pacemaker. I had to re-pack the box several times to get the lid on.

Okay, I have responses to a number of things here, so this will get a little long, but I will do my best to keep it short.

I have given much thought to the matter of collecting further contact information, and I realize that we will want to keep things as simple as possible. Every step that we add to this makes a little more work for Autonoz and myself, and every little bit adds up. Thus far, administering this has been quite simple for the most part, so adding a couple of things should not be the end of the world.

We have had some instances when the box has disappeared for a while, and luckily it has always popped back up. One situation that frightens me is where a member passes away while the box is in his possession. A spouse or other family member will most likely have no idea what the box is for, where it should go, or anything. Thus, we need to have a valid email address and phone number. In a worst case scenario, a phone call could be answered by a family member so that we can at least communicate and figure out what step to take next.

So, going forward, we are going to be requesting VALID email addresses and phone numbers when you sign up. Signing up and contact information will be done through a Conversation (private message). Contact information will be stored separately from the participant list that we can all see on Google Sheets so that the information can be kept private. Only Autonoz and myself will have access to contact information and it will not be shared with anyone. In the near future I will be contacting those of you that are already on the list for your contact information. I will also be adding details of this to the first post of this thread.

I know that there are some issues with Conversations in Tapatalk (or there had been) and I am not sure how we will get around them. We'll cross those bridges as we come to them. I also know that some members experience confusion and frustration when trying to use some facets of this wonderful forum. Let's face it, some folks just have an easier time navigating all of the things that appear on our computer screens than other people do. What is intuitive for some is difficult for others. We will do our very best to accommodate each and every person that wishes to participate.

Mac, thanks for getting the box going again. Has its appearance changed a little since you first built it? Is it holding up as well as you expected? Just curious, had to ask. Anyway, don't feel bad about the delay, things like well trouble, death in family, illness, etc., always come up at the worst time.

Jon and Bill, thanks for keeping your debate civil. Constructive debate is a good thing, but sometimes the written word can be misunderstood, thus the need to be a little cautious.

I also understand the need for getting things done in a timely fashion, as I believe that most of us do. But it is important for everyone to remember a few things about this project and why we urge people to keep the box moving, all the while trying to keep a laid back attitude about it:
    1. This project is part of a hobby, which means it is something we do in our leisure time.
    2. Some members have more leisure time than others, for various reasons.
    3. Some members place a higher priority on their hobby than other members.
    4. Some members travel for work and are sometimes out of town for days at a time.
    5. Internet access is not available everywhere, even from cell phones, though it is getting better. This has a big effect for people that travel for work. I personally know this one all too well.
    6. We all prioritize the things that are going on in our lives, and there are outside influences that can affect our prioritization results.

So, once again, let's all try to keep the box in our possession no more than seven days before getting it sent out again. Life has a habit of getting in the way at the worst times, and we understand that there will be occasional delays, thus there will be no judgement by myself or Autonoz. Likewise, there should be no judgement by any of the other participants.

Thank you to everyone here for your patience as we work through the list, and thanks also for doing your best to keep things going.

    Terry,
The box is holding up quite well. It still has one screw hole for the lid that is stripped out that I didn't fix because I was out of argon and I didn't want to delay the box any longer. On the next go round I'll fix it unless someone else gets to it before me.
