Don't forget there are other things in play here. Slop or play in the spindle, the ways, and the cross slide, however minute. Surface feet per minute changes as the diameter decreases. The imperfect molecular structure and internal forces inside the metal being cut. Shear force. The blade itself may flex or deflect. The perfect lathe with the perfect tool post and a perfect cutter in a perfect world would have no trouble parting. I think as long as we are looking at green side of the grass, and have a limited budget, parting is going to be fun.

a gooseneck type of parting tool will shift the point of pivot to above centrehight thus eliminating drawing in of the tool
it will make the setup comparetively more ridgid by advertently creating a weaker point above the centrepoint
