I used the rust-oleum as well. Disassembled to repair everything non functioning, then cleaned with degreaser and or brake cleaner. Doing it this way also allowed me to work on the machines in sections. Another huge benefit to using the rust-oleum products was a close match between aerosol and quart cans. Good prep work should produce good results.

Don't use a clear top coat. For reasons, visit any busy parking lot and look at 10+ year old cars. It will usually be obvious which ones used a clear top coat.
Also if you run into problems buying the better paints, consider having an auto body shop do it. And then let it sit and cure for a month or two before you reassemble and use it.

@wa5cab - thanks for this advice. I should be able to get a better paint. I talked with Sherwin Williams about exactly what I am doing and they have an industrial strength paint they said is what I needed.

I painted my Craftsman lathe with auto paint. I wanted to match the sparkly green that was already on it, and there was nothing even close out of a can. I bought it at a local auto paint store. They sold it to me, no issues.
I used a smaller Harbor Freight sprayer.
The paint is 3 parts: paint, reducer and hardener. Wear a respirator, goggles, head scarf and cover all your skin. I wore coveralls and gloves, too. I did it outside on a calm day. I also made a small enclosure to hang everything on while I painted it. Overspray will get everywhere, so stay away fro cars and anything else you don't want sprayed. AMHIK.
Paint has held up just fine for the last year or so. It gets way oil and cutting fluid on it all the time, along with me brushing off swarf. It looks new still.
