In addition to parallels, (see http://hobby-machinist.com/index.php?topic=1459.0), I also need a set of V-blocks for my milling machine.

So my newbie questions are (same as with parallels):

What size set should I buy to start with (starter set) that will let me do the most things until I can afford other sizes?

What types should I get first?

What should I avoid?

Thanks guys!

I have quite a stack of Vee blocks, most have been garage sale finds, and most look like they were never used, and I rarely pull them out myself.

Vee blocks can be made by running a few cuts through stock as well.

So as Dalee stated, if you need it, then get one to fit what you need, otherwise do not be in a rush to get one.

I also have multiple sets of V blocks I seldom use. I find I use the small ones more. Unless you have an unlimited budget, My suggestion would to make a set with your new mill. It is good practice and you can make them exactly as you want them. I have quite a few shop made tools that I made years ago that I still use. There are several that I thought I had to have but have never been used once.
