[How do I?] Need Some Help. Need To Make A Lock Washer Stamping Die?

What do I look for in a "small" punch press?

That's a tough question. I would set this job up in a 5 ton or larger punch press if I had a choice of presses to use. I would be looking for a C-frame, Open Back Inclinable (OBI) press, with a full rotation clutch (mechanical). These are made from about 1 to 10 ton in benchtop models, and in stroke lengths of about 1/2 inch to 3 inches. Larger presses are normally floor mounted. Niagara is probably the most common brand in the smaller presses. If I were going to buy a punch press for my shop, I would be looking for a 20 to 30 ton with a 1 to 2 inch stroke. An iron worker might be worth looking at also.

Here are a couple of possibilities in your area.

Thanks, that brings to my attention. I was at a friends shop last yesterday. He has a small Ironworker that he says I am welcome to use. So I guess if I can get Dayton to make me the die(s), I won't have to buy a machine !!!!

That is just wrong, every project requires a new tool! That's why I can't walk through my shop:confused 3:

Me too. I had the chance to buy a really nice Bridgeport complete with Supr Spacer installed in teh table for $800. Didn't have the room in the shop. Now I have the chance to buy a small surface grinder. I still don't have room, but I have a friend that says we can make room in his shop for it
