I have been going to an auction in my area an buying some odd an end pcs of steel for little to nothing..well I bid an one on 4 12ft 3 8ft pcs of 2.125 round solid it has a semi sanded finish. machines good with carbide. makes hot gold blue to purple stringers chips no matter what feed or speed or cutter. I gave 50 for the lot but like to know what I have.?

Spark test with known steels will help also.
 
With a little work you could have 1.5" square stock by the mile. That's gotta be a couple of cents per pound. Great buy.
 
Yeah I have no idea but for the price I can make fly cutters an boring bars for Christmas,,lol I found the sweet spot for feed and speed after destroying a few inserts but I scored a ton of cutters at same place the bar was just a fluke I put the bid on and didn't expect to own it but I do. maybe slice it up an flee bay it. It is magnetic and will try and spark test.
 
From the description it sounds like 4140. But that's just a wild guess.

I have experience at fab but not so much in raw materials. And am new at machining but totally hooked now. What have I done.?
