I am in the midst of rehabbing an old Rockwell 18" wood planer. It was three phase set up and am converting to single phase. This is a two motor unit with a 5 hp cutter motor and a 3/4 hp feed motor. I have the required single phase motors and have managed to get a Allen Bradley 509 starter. It seems that AB uses a different numbering scheme from other starters I have used in the past. I have included the schematic I have used before . I have done a Web search for AB schematics but come up dry. Does anyone have such a schematic or can you guide me in wiring this stater up?
TIA
Randy

Found this. I usually take them apart to clean the contacts and figure out how they need to be wired. Mike

I love that specialized surge suppressor!

You will need a size one starter ( which is what it looks like you have. ) The W49 heaters are rated at 7.33 amp so they will need to be swapped. W56-57 should be about right depending on single phase amp draw. If both motors are good and run at the same time, why not go with a vfd? Dave

Thanks for the responses. I forgot to state that I am pretty much a blue smoke electrician, so I don't really know which wires go where from that diagram. I also need a remote start/stop.
Thanks for the call on the W-49s. I was told when I got the starter that it was for a 7hp motor
The VFD may be the Plan B, if I can't figure out plan A. The other issue is the cost of a 6 HP VFD.
Which is the "specialized surge suppressor"? Is that the blue gizmo?

The new W heaters will be in the $10 range on ebay. Dave

Here's a link to the Rockwell Automation Library search page. If you're not aware Allen Bradley was bought out by Rockwell around 20 years ago. They have an extensive online library. I have several machines with the 509 series starters. It may take a while to wade through all the documentation, but it is available.

Here's a link to the typical wiring diagrams for Allen Bradley starters. The 509 series start on page 11.

Hey Guys, many thanks. I made the same query to the guy I bought the starters from. He got busy, and I figured that I would never hear from him. Well today he responded and made things simple enough for a marginal electrician like me. I bread boarded things up and wonder of wonders; things ran and all the magic smoke stayed in place. :D I will hit eBay tonight for the W heaters. I am a happy camper. Now I have to reassemble the planer and make a box for the starter, but those tasks are within my wheelhouse.
I just wanted to close things out for future readers. This forum rocks.
