The other day I used my mechanical edge finders on the side plate of my vice and some tiny grooves were left behind on the plate. I could feel it when I slided my finger nails over those grooves. The tip of the finder seems to be OK. It has got a purple-color coating which is probably some kind of wear resistant stuff like those used on some cutting tools. Those grooves are probably non issue but I keep wondering if the edge finder is use on parts made of softer materials such as aluminium or plastic. Will there be any significant problems ?

I have noticed marks left on softer materials but they are cosmetic fot the most part. I don't leave the efge finder in contact with the part any longer than necessary to minimize this. If you are experiencing grooves, you may have a burr in the tip or carrying some machining debris on the surface of the tip.
