If a desired taper angle is known, using the trig. function tangent for determining tailstock or boring head set-over is quite handy and accurate.

One indicator is required, AGD style preferred. A bar with parallel & square ends of known length (longer the better) and positive carriage stop or a second indicator set parallel to carriage travel, is also needed.

However, (there's always a catch) the stock to be tapered needs to be pre-turned to the same dia. the length to be measured for tangent, unless you already have a test bar. The greater the set-up carriage travel the greater the reduction of error.

This works just as easy for setting angles for a job on a vertical or horizontal mill. Sine bar use is fine but not everybody has Jo Blocks. But hey, for some jobs a protractor is close enough. Heh heh
