I just got a new copy of a 1998 Lindsay Publications reprint of Machine Shop Methods by Lorus J. Milne, original copyright 1950.
I haven't finished reading it yet, but it seems like a good book for beginners and others. Chapter 17 has 23 plans ranging from a thread cleaner to a dividing head.
In addition to the usual places like ABE books, etc. Little Machine Shop also carries it:
