Hey Randy, that's one fantastic post. IMO, it's more than complimentary to what I wrote and, in fact, I think it should absolutely be required reading before reading what I wrote.
Almost all of us are in the same HSM situation, or at least not doing any volume of parts. Thus, actual cutting time is of little importance. I spend way more time drawing, setting up and getting my head screwed on straight, than I do watching chips curl off whatever I'm doing. That makes our decisions much different than the pro looking at how many $$/hour a machine costs to have sitting there. I too can't really live by HSS alone, but 100% carbide would be just as intolerable, if not more so.
