It's an Atlas lathe Jim, but not as we know it...

Came across these two Atlas lathes the other day, seems extremely unlikely but does anyone know if there is any connection, or even if they both came from the same factory? The owner loves the big one but can't find any info on it, he has running off an overhead flat belt line shaft and it's a big beast, does anyone know if there's any connection between the two of them?
