Is it possible to cut a bucket pin w/ grinder?

I need a bucket pin for my excavator but the Cat cost is crazy. I found one that is too long and would need a new keeper hole drilled. Is it possible to cut it to length with an angle grinder ( I don’t have a band saw) and drill a hole with a drill press and new metal bit? I’ve read conflicting reports on the hardness of 4140 Q&T.

You can do what you are describing. Use a good cobalt bit and oil when drilling.

I have several worn out pins in my scrap bin. the hardness is only on the surface. A grinder should easily go through one. Even use the grinder to start a spot for the drill, and you should be fine. I use a grinder to start the cut, then switch to the bandsaw, and cut the head off. Then on the lathe, take a deep first cut starting from the head end to get through the surface. then the rest turns fine. These are big like 2&1/4 X 8 to 10", if that makes a difference.
