So I had been looking for a metal lathe for about a year or two. I was mainly looking for a South Bend or Logan and all the ones I could find for decent prices had bed wear that I was too worried would be problematic.
I ahd a vacation coming up and REALLY wanted something to play with while I had time and so decided to buy a friend's Sherline 4000. We got to a price and he included a ton of stuff.
I decided that since I now had a lathe in route, I needed a way to do milling also. So... A milling base was added to the assortment.
Then I decided that I need to get rid of some stuff that I hadn't used in ages and make some room (still working on that process). So I posted an ad on Craigslist selling a 3d Printer, a Printrbot Simple, I had that had been gathering dust (didn't suit my needs). Someone wanted it and offered to trade me..... You guessed it, another Sherline.
The lathe itself is in great shape and came with a Bison Chuck that's easily $300. I will likely need to toss the electronics as they are usually proprietary to the companies software, but the steppers may be good.
So as you can see, I'm starting a nice little collection.
The one lathe is set up with a sliding saddle and I'll keep that set up as long as I think its useful. I do want to add a ER32 Collet headstock to one of them and find a 4400 for the longer bed as well.......
Ugh... I've got it bad, haven't I?
