Also, serial numbers were assigned when machines were ordered. If the order was cancelled, the serial number was not reused. Sometimes an order would sit on hold for a year or more before the machine was built, which results in some odd pairings of serial number and build date.

When you had the multi-lathe dilemma, it wasn't mentioned which had greatest collection of related tooling. Tooling can't remedy a bad machine, but definitely makes a good one sing.
I'm more than just familiar with gunsmithing. Not today's various clowns bolting stuff on. For my money, if the Axelson had sufficient spindle bore, it'd instantly be #1. I've run most every brand, one size or another, Axel's are even-up with my 'US Big Three'. There's a ''Euro Big Three' too. Great as they are, South Bend isn't among them. Every machine tool has an envelope it excels in. That's first prerogative, second is ergonomics, what's it like to drive?
