How do I remove the chuck?

If it's a D1-4 then, on the neck of the spindle, there are 3 square bolt notches. Turn each one about 1/2 turn CCW. The chuck should come off. Always put a piece of board on your ways to protect yourself and the ways if you fumble the chuck.

Better than a board is to run your tailstock up near the chuck and with the jaws open slightly larger than the tailstock quill, run the quill out when you release the camlocks. Then snug the chuck on the quill and pull it back. When you loosen the chuck, you will easily be able to handle it to remove it from the tailstock quill. A board under it at all times is a good thing in case you drop it, any way you go to remove it.

Tony,

You just got "Thanked" for that one.
