HF 8x12 Lathe - budget 4 jaw chuck homemade
Well let's say rigged, rather than homemade. I have occasional need for holding things with 4 jaws and up to 6 inches, so I put this together. I used a Grizzly 4 jaw wood chuck ($30) with a 3/4 -16 thread and a matching MT3 arbor with 3/8 - 16 end thread for a drawbar. BUT what I did not want to do is pull off the 3 jaw chuck every time I needed to do something with the 4 jaw. So I had a 1 1/2 Straight to MT3 adapter socket and cut that down to 2 1/4 inches to reduce length, but not have the MT3 hit the chuck hole. I can hold down to 1/2 inch square or 1/8 inch flat or up to 6 1/4 inch max. I also have a MT3 to MT2 adapter so the other tools can all work in the shorten 1 1/2 Straight to MT3 adapter socket. Definitely use a drawbar in this situation, or just work with light material.
