My thinking worked, I kept all the smoke in the motor.

On ALMOST all single phase motors that are reversible, T5 & T8 are the two wires that need to be changed to reverse the motor. Having said that, you always want to check the name plate for wiring diagrams of motor from foreign companies. It really helps if you have 3 ph since you only have to reverse any TWO leads.

Ya mine wasn't just switching 5 and 8.
After staring at it a while and scratching diagrams on the better part of a 2x6 I finally got it first try.
