Getting to know my way arround my 12" atlas craftsman lathe and while checking my travel indicators against a dial indicator i checked my headstock i decided to check some other things. Just by pulling on my 6"chuck i can deflect the headstock
.0035 . Mine is a timken model i made sure the preload nut was tight and there no noticable end play, is this a normal amount ?

Bandaid,

.0035" sounds excessive. Pull the chuck, indicate on the spindle shoulder, and using a 1/2" dia. rod inserted through the spindle to pull with, repeat the test.

Is the headstock deflecting relative to the ways?
Or is the spindle deflecting relative to the headstock?

Put the indicator on a magnetic mount, mount the mag on the headstock, repeat the test by lifting on the chuck. Remove the chuck and lift up on the end of the spindle.

I had the magnetic mount on the way and altho i "assume" it was all in the spindle i guess the whole head could have moved. I will check that next time im in the shop.
