Picked up a single unit DRO for the cross slide of my 16" lathe and am having difficulty figuring how to mount said unit. Any assistance (drawings, pictures, etc.) would be appreciated.

I have my read head mounted hanging between the ways via a block bolted to the follow rest holes. The scale is mounted to the taper attachment extension and the front of the criss slide. I machined a flat on the taper attachment extension, the front was fiddly, I freehanded an angled mounting pad. It all just fits and clears everything... JUST. This is on a 14 1/2, which is pretty much the same size

Appreciate the help Mr. Whoopee and Randy but my lathe doesn't have a taper attachment. Does give me some ideas though.

Added a kit DRO to my 36" bed SB 10" which may give you some ideas as well. Could not afford to give up any X or Z territory so mounted the X out back and the Z underneath at the back. Did not lose any tailstock to saddle movement and have full use of the steady/travel rests. The cross slide extension replacement was a little fussy to make. Also made a locking lever conversion on the tailstock which gets rid of the wrench interference problem when the tailstock is tight into the saddle. Don't know if your larger lathe has the same problem.
Hope this helps.
