Hi all,
I've recently been looking for a smaller lathe to complement my Lodge and Shipley 16", and now have the opportunity to pick up a hardinge ESM-59 at a very good price. The only problem I see is that it doesn't include a cross-slide, as the PO was using it as an ID chamfering machine only.
I looked around, and the prices for split bed cross slides are astronomical - way more than the price of the lathe in many cases. Is there a more reasonable (read: cheaper) option, perhaps something that could be adapted without too much trouble?
I think i understand the limitations of this type of lathe. I can thread and turn tapers on my L&S, and was planning to use this as a plain turning lathe for smaller parts that would be cumbersome on the big lathe, which it seems like it would be well suited to. It has the hex turret, which I understand is less desirable, but I'm in a home shop setting and can live with it for the price.
Any advice would be much appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
Lee
