I have seen that done right, welding a cylinder, with an automatic weld positioner (auto rotab).

As long as the ground is directly attached to the part (in this case the aluminum tube parallel supporting the part) there should be no problem.
This, I have welded quite a few driveshafts on a lathe. I use a 2' piece of stripped #2 welding wire that gets looped over the shaft for a ground. I use it whenever I'm welding aluminum and never get arc marks from the ground clamp.
