It would never have occurred to me that getting a decent file would be so hard. I've been using the same 8 in. Nicholson single-cut bastard for over 40 years. Recent increases in usage, along with harder materials, finally caused it to go dull. I bought a couple of new Nicholsons, which were a tremendous disappointment. Then I found a listing for some new Grobet files on eBay, 5 for $37. Now THAT'S a file! I should probably get some 6 inchers too.

How about old Nicholson's ? I probably have about 200 or so that I'm going to post here next month . :dunno:

I was buying nos files at the flea market like crazy for a couple years. I have one file I really like that has hard chrome on it. I'll probably never wear it out.

Eta: the chromed file just says made in Austria. Superchrome is what they were sold under.

Can’t go wrong with Vallorbe, Grobet, Tomé Fèteira (Blu-Dan) or Corradi.

Somewhere I heard you could sharpen files using acid?

When Nicholson/Simonds moved at the time most of their line (if not all by now) down south to Columbia South America, they really went to crap. I wouldn't touch a newer Nicholson/Simonds anymore. The ones you found now are now the good ones

When I was running Stellite in production runs thousands of pieces I bought a carbide file because a normal file was not hard enought.
