Yeah, I've used them myself. Just didn't know the terminology.

I read a tip years ago about using old golf balls for file handles. They actually work quite well. You drill a hole into the middle of the ball and hammer it onto the file tang. Anyone remember those liquid-center balls they had in the '60s? Turns out I still had one. When I hit the center, it sprayed a clear liquid all over the place. At least I don't glow in the dark.

Don't let me sidetrack you from making those beautiful wood handles. You'll get a lot more satisfaction out of something you've made yourself.
