Does anyone know of a good cheap accurate reliable multifix type tool post for a 7” class lathe?

Yeah, not all 7xx size lathes will use the same tool post and my asks are well outside what they should be, but this has to be the hardest type of tool post to shop for.

If I wanted to just throw money at the problem I’d be set, but I’m looking for decent quality at a decent price that has spare tool holders for a reasonable price.

I had a nice looking one picked out on BG last year, but apparently it has been discontinued and I could find any at all searching the site.

Even that one, while the standard set was reasonable (sub $200) had spare tool holders at $50+ each.

That brand used proprietary tool holders with design features that were supposed to be superior. I don’t really get that but whatever.

So let’s discuss these, what’s out there and are they really better than a wedge type.

good and cheap???? is that an oxymoron?
There’s a mix of humor in there, however, the machfit or however it’s spelled AXA set I bought for my 5” machine exceeded my expectations in every way and could be had for $100-$140.

That fits in the good/cheep matrix, so there’s that.

Insert OR here ! ..............................................................OR /\

There is no such thing as cheap anymore. When was the last time you went to a Subway? No more $5 footlongs! That being said, the best and most reasonable for your fitment, as that is very important. I would recommend an Aloris MXA-AL. Intro set on sale until the end on the month sub $300. Extra holder sub $40.

Is that a multifix type tool post?

I have had some success with Aliexpress vendors. If you need Multifix, consider this:

Post and four holders, fitting various lathe sizes. $142.

There was a discussion somewhere last November, and I did a little digging:

Aa looks to be the best fit, although you might get away with Ab. Quick search of "aa multifix" found sets ranging from around $150 — $250 on eBay.

That’s the ones I was thinking of!

Thanks, don’t know why I was thinking they were on BG, probably because I got my other set there.

I might have started that thread, I dropped the ball on this and couldn’t remember if I had inquired about this before.

I had seen the ones on eBay but something was bugging me about them and I couldn’t remember what it was.

Now I remember, pricing.

Apparently the prices on these have plummeted in the last 6-8 months and I believe the e bay offerings at that time were ~40% higher than aileexpress.

Iirc they were $225-$250 on e bay at that time, but there was a specific brand I couldn’t find on there that had a better set of features that I liked.

Appreciate the chart. I need to do some measuring, but yeah the AA or Ab size would work.

This is the exact set I was looking for.

They get great reviews and you’re not going to find them cheaper.

This may be the AO size but I’m on the phone and you really need to sift through the offerings to find what you want.

I’m thinking the AA plus might be the ticket.
