I wish to round the end of some 12x25mm hot rolled mild steel in my lathe.
The cutter is an end mill of 12mm dia held in a collet and the steel bar is bolted to the tool post so it can be rotated against the side of the cutter thus milling a rounded end.
There is a longer handle for leverage on the end of the bar.
I will mill a bit at a time untill I reach full depth.
I have done this with aluminium with no problems but this is the first time with steel.
What I would like to know is what would be a reasonable speed for the tool?
Thanks.

Start at around 500 rpm with the 12mm cutter, see how it goes.

Thanks Bob. the speed was spot on, an easy job.
