Compressor leaks down..... grrrr

These cable drains are actually on Class 1 trucks to drain the air tanks. I had one of these on mine, and like another post said it was messy.
Yes, they would be messy, especially inside the shop. Outdoors, they might be fine.
 
I keep the drain valve cracked open under my compressor so that it barely hisses. That way there is no water build up inside where you can not see it. Water drips out into a pan as it occurs. A deliberate 'leak'. The pan being easily visible so it can be emptied when necessary.
 
In the dry air here in the California central valley, I only get a couple of cups of water per year in my compressor, and have to remember to drain it once in a while.
