Cincinnati 1b Knee Mill Journeys to MN

This is my third attempt to post these pics. Sorry for the delay.

BCall posted a Cincinnati 1b knee mill on the tools for sale thread back in January. It was a long shot. I replied, and began to work on 1. my brides approval, 2. paying for it, 3. the logistics of moving it.

BCall was a joy to work with. Without his help and encouragement, the entire thing would have fallen apart early. Without my brides patience and tolerance I'd be... well... many of you are in the same boat.

I had to wait until March. I teach full time and Spring Break was the only reasonable window to retrieve her from Tennessee. I was lucky that Clarks Iron and Metal Recycling was willing to hold it based on a telephone agreement without money down. If you are ever in TN, I'd recommend visiting Clarks. Make room in your vehicle, and time in your day, as you are likely to wish you had more time and more room. I was able to borrow a 2500HD Chevy truck (9mpg) from a friend and rent a 20foot flat bed trailer from his brother-in-law. Thus, began the 1900 mile round-trip to Murfreesburo TN. I got off work at 930pm Sunday, ahnd planned to leave MN at 0430 Monday morning in order to arrive in Murfreesburo on Tuesday morning. My wife was scheduled to be at work on Thursday morning so this was a whirlwind tour.

Most importantly, I hope that these pics might help somebody unload a heavy machine safely. While perhaps unorthodox it worked very well.

Loading was easy (for me). BCall and Woody had already built a HD pallet and bolted the mill down. Woody merely lifted it with his skid steer and placed her on the trailer. Unloading. I showed up at the shop of the auto-mechanic who we have used for the past 20+ years and asked if he was up for a challenge. He gave my a little boy grin, as if no challenge was to large. His eyes got large when he saw the mill and trailer in his lot. He quickly disregarded his boom truck as the winch didn't have an adequate lowering brake. However, I had already borrowed a pallet jack. He backed his flat bed up to the trailer. The jack was under the mill. The winch was used to move the mill to the flat bed. We tied her down. He backed the flat bed onto the shop apron. Attached the winch with a wide fabric strap high on the column of the mill. Slowly lowered the deck of the flat bed on the apron. And very slowly carefully prayerfully released the winch. The pallet jack slowly rolled to the shop floor. All went well. No toes, fingers, or mills were sacrificed in the process.

Hey Daryl I see your post on the snob site the one I am not allowed to reply to. Anyways we are real
close with out serial no.s Mine is 6J1V5D-51. With the limited amount of info I can find mainly shop
photos Im comming up with around 1955-56 thereabouts. I look at mine and its hard to beleive its a
1956 its condition looks more like a 2006. Mine was local and maybe the warning sticker says it all.
"YOU USE IT-YOU CLEAN IT- OR YOU ARE FIRED" Maybe due to these Mills were or are very very
expensive almost twice of a Bridgey. Of all I read on sites about these, I guess Im the luckey one, mine
has all the options. I have a wiring diagram, but its almost impossible to read. sam

That was a very big job for a home shop. It shows determination can get the job done.

Daryl Benny's a lot of help and a great guy also, He helped me get the camelback drill press from his Friend. He took me to the scrap yard but there was nothing to get.

You should have seen the other Cincinnati mill the sold out of there a couple years ago, it was a monster. The roll back bed was bending and I thought it was gonna fold in half and it was a very large roll back. Thanks for the pics.

Saturday my stepfather in-law, a retired electrical engineer and BP owner, is due at 1100. There are several wires loose in the column and switches. Unclear which goes where. I anticipate he will make short work of it. Ah.... I hope that doesn't mean electrical short!

I purchased a local Cincinnati 8" vise and found some T nuts to fit. Will finish making the replacement gib screw and hopefully spin her up on Saturday afternoon. Wish I didn't work 1 1/2 jobs and the fire dept... Still need to get her off the pallet. That's still a head scratcher due to ceiling clearance height. Looking at building some toe-jacks, etc. Hmmm.

I'll keep all of your posted and supply pics. At this point I don't see that a complete teardown is necessary.
