Chattering when cutting with countersink tool on lathe

The multi flutes will definately chatter if you back the feed off on them . You need to push them . :encourage:

I prefer the zero flutes, hard to get to chatter.

I had trouble with countersinks, bought it seems like every style possible, all gave trouble, and eventually realized I had to slow the RPM way down, keep reasonable pressure on, and they pretty much all work now.

They are not like drills.

Partially lock the tailstock spindle to take out any play when feeding in. Slow speed and fast feed also contribute to tightening things up.

As others have said there are better designs. But, to try to get decent results with that one I would slow the lathe WAY DOWN, possibly as slow as it will go and give it a decent feed/pressure with good cutting oil. A light feed with all those cutting edges is sure to chatter.
