Just bought the
3/8" Indexable Carbide Turning Tool Set from Shars.

Looking to purchase inserts for backup for when I need them

Is there much performance/durability difference between the replacement TCMT inserts that Shars sells or lets say the more $$$ Sandvik

For hobby shop use on my C man lathe...Yea I know, not robust enough... but seems to work OK so far

Also looking for a chart or description as to how to understand the insert numbering system

Tks

Definitely a big improvement in finish and control using higher quality inserts. Don't know about a chart, I am thinking an Ouiji board might help me understand the numbering system.

First go here - great page for insert info: http://www.carbidedepot.com/resources.htm

Then go here for info on nomenclature: http://www.carbidedepot.com/formulas-insert-d.htm

Actually, the best way to learn about inserts is to choose a company that you prefer - I like Circle Machine and Seco. Download their catalogs and spend some time reading the technical part of their literature. They will tell you which grades and coatings are good for whatever material, explain the geometry of the various inserts and so on. Keep in mind that inserts require speed and rigidity to work as intended ... but you already know that.

As for the quality of Chinese vs industry standard inserts from Sandvik, Seco, Iscar, Valenite, etc., I don't know but I prefer to buy inserts from known companies myself.
