Hello,
I am new to the forum and a novice machinist. I inherited a South Bend 9" lathe that was originally shipped in 1933. Per the South Bend Serial Number card, the lathe is described as a 9 1/4" x 3', "Quick Change Gear Bench Horizontal Drive", catalog number 480-Y. I am beginning the process of refurbishing the lathe. As I believe is fairly common, the bull gear has a number of damaged teeth. The bull gear lock pin for engaging the back gears is of the type that must be pulled out and moved either up or down to engage/disengage the cone pulley from the spindle. In looking for a replacement bull gear all the gears I have found are the plunger pin type. My question is whether there is some sort of modification that can be done to allow one of the plunger pin bull gears to work with my lathe? Thanks for any insight or help!
