anyone know a good place to get a 3/8 or 1/2 thick 9"x5" plate?Thanks

Was going to suggest on line metals like Randy. Gonna cost you about $175 for a 12" square piece.

Here's a place that you might try: Printing companies that do embossed printing use brass or bronze plates. The plates are typically 1/4" or 5/16" When the printing job is finished, the plates are usually scrapped. If you check with some printers, you might be able to pick up the metal for scrap prices.

If you need the thicker cross section for better heat conductivity, you could stack two back to back and solder or epoxy them together.

Here is an example of one of these plates used in a project. After milling the printer's artwork off and skimming the plate, I still had 1/4" of plate left.http://www.hobby-machinist.com/thre...in-your-shop-today.14637/page-115#post-298744 post # 3444

Only 1/4" thick and not wide enough but you can check and see if they can supply what you want. Prices are good
