Thought I'd make a few holders for my boring bars today. My original plan is to ream and or bore a close fit then slit along the side with a narrow saw. Drilling a clearance hole and tapped below the slit for clamping. Anyone see a problem with this? I wasn't going to use a sleeve of any type.

I have a boring bar holder I made in my apprenticeship, a million years ago. It is hardened, has four set screws across the top with a 1.00 hole through it. I have a four inch long SH 3/4 by 1" drill bushing, slitted it length and a 3 inch long 1/2 by 3/4 drill bushing, also slitted its length. I can hold with this 1" 3/4" and 1/2" boring bars easily, already centered on the spindle. It fits comfortably in my 4 tool holder.

I would suggest you bore the hole, then ream it to the finest finish you can get in the holder. I would make the length of the holder at least 3-4 times the diameter of the bar or longer to provide stability. Otherwise, your plan sounds great.
