bearing removal

Hi All

I have a model 40 mill - c. 1949 - the motor pulley belt comes to a "transfer station" in the middle of the upper part of the mill, which is a plate with a pulley on top and a pulley on the bottom of a common shaft - the top is driven by the motor and pulley on the bottom is driven by the top pulley and then via a belt drives the head

where the shaft goes through the plate there is a hollow that fits 2 bearings that the common shaft for the 2 pulleys goes through

i am replacing those 2 bearings

i pressed the shaft and it came out of the plate with the 2 bearings on

i can't seem to press the shaft out of the 2 bearings - is there a tip or a trick?

the top bearing seems to have a cap of some sort over part of it - i don't know if that is machined as part of the shaft or is movable

at any rate, i pressed from the top (i.e., not against that cap) - i put a lot of pressure on it and nothing budged - so there is something that i am not following

again, it appears to go cap, bearing, spacer, bearing (possibly on a bushing)

any suggestions?

Wouldn't surprise me a bit if those bearings were shrunk on that shaft. Heat them up and then press it out. They don't have to be red hot, just enough to expand them.
 
YUPP heat them babies , did you use any penetrating oil on the shaft and bearing fit?? It may be better to press the bearings individually . From the looks of the set up its held in place by two bolts. First thing I'd do is polish the shaft making sure there's no dimpled areas to hang up and do more gulling. Heat oil and pressure. Do you have a bearing separator? It would help
 
You are replacing these, correct?

If they don't come right off with a bit of heat, just torch them off. First urn off the outer part and get the ball race out of the way. Then just barely cut on the side of the inner race.
 
thanks guys - got it apart, kind of the hard way

what is good to know for the next person that might search this up, is that the split ring at the top is movable - however the spacer in between the 2 bearings is part of the shaft - so they have to come off in opposite directions - that was the trick....
