Backgear repair

I wonder if it's a steel gear? Almost looks like zamak in the pictures but it couldn't be- right? LOL
Looks like a good fix though
Hmm... it doesn't look cast to me, so I don't think its zamak. I'm guessing its a steel gear based on the machining finish/color.

FWIW, this seems like a particularly cool solution/kit this guy sells, though I'm sure he is selling some off-the-shelf-gears (perhaps bored?).

if it’s cast iron, not too much press fit or it may (will) break.
i explained how my SB9 small backgear was fixed on another thread.
It works great. I’ll try to find it if you need it.

Jim F, I found the other back gear thread.
it is South Bend 9A Back gear. It is from Jan 4 2021.
scroll down to post #4, it explains how mine was fixed.
It sounds hokey, but like I said I’ve cut MANY threads on this lathe, it works great.
Feel free to contact me if you do this, it is a great fix.

I recently used this kit to repair my back gears on the 9A I have. As I'm no machinist I had someone else do the turning down of the old teeth to a dimension that this slide on and LockTight one wanted. So far it has worked for the few back geared jobs I have done since.

My back gear small gear had a couple of brazed and filed repair teeth and had a clunk with each BG shaft revolution. The repair allows a bit tighter gear mesh and is a tad quieter with no single clunk sound. Andy
