the clausing 1500 lathe i bought a few years ago came with an american stand 15hp CNC rotary converter.. (the lathe is 7.5hp).. it has functioned flawlessly.. i also use it to power the 3hp acer knee mill i bought.. it works fine for that as well..although not specifically tuned for it..
i am thinking about getting vfds for both the mill and the lathe tho... primarily to cut down on the noise level.. a 15hp idler makes a good bit of noise by itself.. while vfd prices have dropped significantly you are still looking at spending 1-2 hundred or more for hammond/hoffman enclosures, backplates, fusing, seems like the list goes on..
