You might be as surprised as I was to find that Amazon.com can be a competitive place to buy a few kinds and sizes of steel, brass, and aluminum.

1144 Stressproof round bar is REALLY hard to get at any price where I live, but Amazon has it at competitive prices. And with a "Prime" membership the shipping is free, which can make a big difference. Example: a 48" length of 1" diameter 1144 Stressproof is $27.31 with free shipping for Prime members. Their prices are not great on all sizes and types, but its worth comparing, especially for a small or heavy order where the cost of shipping can be terrible from other vendors.

Thank you for this. As a result when recently I needed a piece of brass bar, 1" X 3/4" X 12" I tried Amazon. Price was good, and the shipping with Prime was free. You're right, often shipping on "mail order" metal stock is quite high.
