What is the difference between coated and un-coated inserts?
What kinds of metal do you use each type for?
Un-coated seem to be cheaper so I guess they are not used as much!

I use uncoated on aluminum and mild steel in 32.5? inserts. TiN coated seems to have good results with higher cutting speeds. AlTiN works great on most steels especially harder ones but not for aluminum. If you look at the introductory pages for inserts you will find better descriptions than I can provide. Try the online Enco catalog at the front of the insert section for instance.

Uncoated inserts are cheaper because they have not gone through an expensive coating process.
Use a particular coating on the material that the manufacturer intended it for otherwise you are paying for a coating step that may not benefit your particular application.
