You can use a stack of gage blocks with longer end blocks. Just try to keep one end of the bore gage in one spot and sweep in all directions and watch the needle for the zero. I have even used a micrometer to set a bore gage when I had a couple thou to play with.
I generally just use an outside mic, and a .0001 indicator on a decent bore gauge. Have done Harley crank bearing race honing, which requires .0003 tolerance with no issues. It does take some practice to get the "feel" of it down, and achieve repeat-ability. Mike
