Any Muzzle Loader Buiders Here ??

Is the lock mortise done? Is there a touchhole in the barrel?
 
TA no and no I haven't been able to do much with it yet winter here has been rough
with either a lake or an ice rink in the shop and projects have had to be
put on the back burner (bummer) got a nasty storm blowin up tonite
and keeping fingers crossed on another tree not falling on it like last winter.:headache:
luckily last years fall just creased it but what a mess to clean up............

That's strange that the lock mortise isn't done but the trigger is installed, given that the trigger position is dependent on the lock position (and geometry of the actual lock used), and the lock position is dependent upon the touchhole position. Now you have to find a lock that will fit with the existing trigger and touchhole positions.

Sounds like he was going for a Kentucky long long rifle , or punt gun. I have built a couple but have no extra parts except some nipples . Lots of fun and if your a bladesmith your ahead of the game on some forge your parts , trial and error is how YA learn. If you have a black powder gun take the lock and copy it but size it to your rifle. If they could do it over a hundred years ago with the tools you have your way ahead of them. Keep us posted and we love pictures.

Norseman, I've done a few flintlocks from a blank. If you haven't found americanlongrifles.com gun building forum, you should check it out. Very similar to this place - lots of very skilled people freely providing information to those of us learning.
