Can anybody tell me what thread the crossfeed screw is on an 11" Standard Modern Series 2000 (or a 10/11" Utilathe)? My friend has one with a badly worn out nut which I may have to replace for him. I am guessing it is something like 1/2-10 LH ACME. I'll verify it myself before starting of course, but want to try and price out a tap in the mean time.

Thanks

Believe there's one for sale on ebay (or has been, recently). Might be for an 1120, but might fit if so. Somebody was clearly selling off a midsize SM as subassemblies (there was a complete apron for sale, for example).

Ozark -and multiple e-bay sellers, some from canada- have manuals for sale. Cost is high, 35 bucks for a copy and up, but if you avoid Ozark (my impression is that they sell the less detailed operator's handbook) and get the original operator's handbook published by SM, there may be very detailed drawings/specs. Originals had greenish heavy covers at least in some cases. The ones I've located for my 1334 have very large format (2-3 page foldout) engineering drawings, with both supplier and supplier part number called out for nearly everything, right down to oil seals and specialty fasteners. On the 1120 and 1334 from the 70's/80's, the crossfeed screw is called out as 5/8-10 Acme LH. It's very possible the 2000 is similar, SM used a lot of common parts. Poke around, you may find the drawings for the 2000 online at other sites.

LeBlonde is the current authorized part supplier, somewhere in Ohio I believe. IF they have a part, be sure you're sitting down when you look at the price.

Thanks. There is one on e-bay which has been there for a while, but it is too big. Fortunately he's got his backlash issues sorted out and it wasn't the nut after all.

I recently bought a 2000 series 1120 and it has a badly worn cross slide screw as well. I plan on replacing the screw, did you find out what kind of thread it is? Did you replace the cross slide screw?

If there is a section of thread that is still good, usually at the ends, you could easily identify the thread. Type of thread by visual and pitch by measuring.

I measured the thread as suggested and it is 1/2-10 left hand thread. At first I thought the screw was badly worn because of the play in the nut. After reading up on measuring the screw, it turns out the screw looks like it is in decent condition and I would like to replace just the nut. Does anyone know if there any common lathes that use a 1/2-10 LH nut? I called Standard Modern in Canada and they want $250 for the nut.

I see you're in Toronto - I'm in Kitchener.
I haven't got around to making my nut yet - if I had time, I'd make you one too. I did buy the reamer though - if you want to make two, I'll lend you the reamer and pay for the material - you can mail the reamer back with the second nut.

Just a thought.

I have the time, might take you up on that. When you say reamer, do you mean you have a 1/2-10 LH thread tap?

Yes I have a brand new 1/2-10 LH ACME tap, ordered specifically for this job. I'll PM you my e-mail address.

FYI, just bought a SB Fourteen cross feed screw and nut for $275 from Miller Fabrication and Welding. This screw is larger and longer than the SM 11" so maybe cheaper... I think he charges around $60 for just a nut.
